Turnitin.com

What is turnitin.com?

Turnitin.com is a website where students “turn it in.” I’ll let the website speak for itself:

Plagiarism Prevention

Recognized worldwide as the standard in online plagiarism prevention, Turnitin helps educators and students take full advantage of the internet’s educational potential.

A Proven Solution

Used by thousands of institutions in over eighty countries, Turnitin’s comprehensive plagiarism prevention system lets you quickly and effectively check all of your students’ work in a fraction of the time necessary to scan a few suspect papers using a search engine.

A Complete Search

Every paper submitted is returned in the form of a customized Originality Report. Results are based on exhaustive searches of billions of pages from both current and archived instances of the internet, millions of student papers previously submitted to Turnitin, and commercial databases of journal articles and periodicals.

Why use turnitin.com?

Instructors use turnitin.com to do two things: to police/prevent plagiarism and to teach students how to document source materials appropriately.

When you submit your papers to turnitin.com, your paper is checked against a large database of information. If the language of your paper is similar to any language in the database, your paper is flagged in the originality report. If you have appropriately documented your source materials, then there’s no plagiarism problem; research and using source materials are a part of crafting papers, so there’s no harm there.

If you haven’t documented your source materials correctly, then there’s a problem. I have to determine if this is an error on your part, or if you have attempted to cheat in my course. Usually, we’ll have a chat where I’ll determine what the appropriate action is: teaching you or refreshing your memory about how to cite source materials or failing you for cheating.

Finally, turnitin.com also comes in handy with temperamental computers. Throughout each unit, I’ll have you upload drafts of your project. If your computer has a problem or if you lose the file, as long as you’ve been uploading drafts, I’ll be able to get an electronic copy of your paper for you.

How will we use it this semester?

Every single essay that you write this semester must be uploaded to turnitin.com. If you turn in a copy of your paper in class but don’t upload that same copy to Turnitin.com, then your paper is considered late: half credit is subtracted from the grade.

So be sure that you register soon, and that you don’t forget to upload your papers.
