English 101: Quiz Grade for Monday
During class today (Friday, October 23), we talked in a little more detail about the “grammar” of films (camera angles, editing, and sound) as well as the codes of horror films (most importantly, that the themes of most horror films is knowledge). I had hoped to have you apply some of these principles to “The Life and Death of the a Pumpkin” during class, but we didn’t get to it.
So, over the weekend, write a few paragraphs in which you respond to the following prompt: usually, there’s nothing frightening about picking a pumpkin, carving it, and then displaying it for Halloween. This short film, though, manages to make this process seem horrifying. In what way do the camera angles, the editing between images, and the sounds work to make this normally mundane tale frightening or unnerving? (I’ll collect your work on Monday to give you some quiz points.)
Be sure, too, that you’re caught up on all the reading for the unit. Don’t forget that I’ve posted notes on the documents and handouts page under Unit III. You might want to have these around for class next week.
Any questions? Email me! Have a great weekend!
