Help

I need some advice on how to start my paper if I'm going to use the movie Halloween. I don't see it being a twist between horror and comedy so what should I use as a thesis statement

Hi Casey,

The first draft is not due on Friday still. We're going to have to push things back because there would be now way that I could keep up with the work.

I just posted about class, and you can see that here: http://adairolson.wordpress.com/2009/10/08/all-classes-no-class-for-the-rest-of-the-week/.

Hi Heather,

Of course you can: there's no real limit other than it needs to be a narrative and deal with some element of the horror that we've discussed in class.

How do you plan to use Halloween in your story?

I don’t believe that any of the stories we have read so far have really described what Noel Carroll says is horror. All of the stories have a frightening twist or eerie feeling but nothing that is truly out of the ordinary. Getting trapped in a vault with dead bodies would definitely scare the average person, but not the way Noel Carroll describes horror. When George was in the vault and had fallen into the coffin it could have been interpreted two different ways. Let us take it the way they try to make us believe it happened. There isn’t anything out of the ordinary by getting pierced by wood and nails.

Noel Carroll defiines horror as something out of the normalor out of category and also something that is threatening. Out of our reading thus far, I would have to say that "In the Vault" would classify under his definition. The reasoning is that the main character, George, is locked in a vault with several dead bodies. While trying to escape, one body comes to life and injures George's ankles. This definatly is not normal and is horrifying. As for the other short stories we have read, I do not find them horrifying. "The Yellow Wallpaper" does not fit his definition becuase there is no threat from someone that is mentally ill and it is also not abnormal that she is ill. When reading the others, still, I do not feel threatened by the suspense that is taking place within the story. With Noel Carroll's definition, I can only say that "In the Vault" will fit into his perception of horror.

The reasoning is that the main character, George, is locked in a vault with several dead bodies. While trying to escape, one body comes to life and injures George’s ankles. This definatly is not normal and is horrifying. As for the other short stories we have read, I do not find them horrifying. “The Yellow Wallpaper” does not fit his definition becuase there is no threat from someone that is mentally ill and it is also not abnormal that she is ill. When reading the others, still, I do not feel threatened by the suspense that is taking place within the story. With Noel Carroll’s definition, I can only say that “In the Vault” will fit into his perception of horror.

Out of all the short stories we have read so far, I think that there is only one that fits Carroll’s definition of horrifying. His definition incorporates two separate things. It has to be abnormal from everyday life and it has to be at least a little bit of a threat to you. “In The Vault” accomplishes both of these. The most horrifying part of it all was when the dead body came to live and destroyed the undertakers Achilles tendons. The dead body coming to life was the abnormal part of Carroll’s definition of horrifying. The danger came from the injury that was inflicted. An injury that bad can cause permanent damage. This was the only story that struck me as being in anyway horrifying by the definition of Noel Carroll.

I think that "In the Vault" is Noel Carroll horrifying.I don't believe there was any supernatural or ghosts in the story, but if I were trapped in a vault with dead bodies and that smell,I would be horrified! That's very unwholesome. The first real scare is when the door slams shut,"For the long-neglected latch was obviously broken, leaving the careless undertaker trapped in the vault,a victim to of his own oversight."This part makes me cringe! There also another part I find frighting."for no sooner was his full bulk again upon it than the rotting lid gave way, jouncing him two feet down on the surface which even he didn't care to imagine.Maddened by the sound,or by the stench, which billowed forth even to the open air".That would not only be horrifying but revolting!

After reading “Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Yellow Wallpaper,” and “In the Vault,” I believe that only one of these stories fits Carroll’s definition of horror. In “In the Vault,” George Birch is trying to escape the vault after being locked in. During Birch’s escape, a dead man grabs his ankles. If an individual is dead, they should not be moving, let alone grabbing someone by the ankles. Because a dead individual performs this action, I would consider it “not normal,” therefore supporting Carroll’s definition of horror. The other stories do not fit Carroll’s definition because I did not feel threatened while reading the story. All in all, the only story I feel that fits Carroll’s definition of horror is “In the Vault.”

Noell Carroll defines horror as something that is not normal and the stories we have read thus far in class have been far beyond normal. The story, "In the Vault", is a perfect example of art-horror because something abnormal happens to a human being. George Birch was injured by something the reader is unaware of and the incident is not normal because we are left to believe he was alone in the vault. In all the stories we, the reader, have read, we have been in suspense and have pictured ourselves in the story and that is why the stories we have read fit Noell Carroll's definition of horror.

Thus far, I believe only one of the short stories we have read would fit in the category of horrific. According to Noel Carroll, two elements are required for it to be a horror. It must be both threatening and impure. Asaph Sawyer from In the Vault exhibits both of these qualities. He proved himself to be very threatening when he seriously injured Birch's achilles tendons. Also, he can be considered impure because he is dead.
