All Classes: Citations Guides and Generators

November 30, 2009 Mrs. Olson Leave a comment

While it might be a little late in the semester to post this, I still think this information will be helpful.

The question any English teacher gets the most from her students is: “How do I cite this?”  And the easiest way to answer that question goes: “Figure out which style your teacher expects, find the appropriate style guide, look up the source, and then copy the example.”

If you’re looking for shortcuts – as students who are crunched for time often are – the following links might be useful.

MLA style citation guide – if you’re old tech, this website is quite handy.  It condenses a lot of the information from the MLA style guide into a single page.

Easybib.com – this is a helpful website that creates different citations for the various citation styles.  You choose the style you’re supposed to use, enter the information, and then the cite will create your bibliographic entry.  If you use the generator, I strongly suggest you double check the citation against a style guide.

MLA Citation Generator – like Easybib.com, this website will generate citations for you… just only in MLA form.  Again, double check your work.

The Bibliograph – If you know what a Boomarklet is, then you’ll find this helpful.  Here’s the description: “Once it’s in your toolbar and you’ll be generating MLA bibliography entries on the fly from Amazon.com book pages and select types of Web sites.”

Have a great Thanksgiving Break!

English 201: Notes/Reminders from Class on Tuesday, November 24

November 24, 2009 Mrs. Olson Leave a comment

What’s Due Post Break:

When you come back from your Thanksgiving holiday, you’ll need to have your final draft of paper IV ready to submit in class as well as posted to Turnitin.com.  Further, you’ll need to bring all your work from Unit IV to class so I can collect a homework grade.

We’re Starting the Last Unit:

We’re starting the last (yay!) and final unit on Tuesday, December 1, so you might want to take a look at the new paper assignment on the documents and handouts page.  You might have noticed that the assignments on your semester schedule are all “TBA.”  Check the documents and handouts page: I’ve posted the schedule.  Please do note that (1) the final draft is due in class on Thursday, December 10 and (2) you’ll need a few extra supplies (scissors, tape, and highlighters) throughout the unit.

Paper #3 and Grades:

If you were in class today (Nov. 24), you received your third papers back.  If not, stop by anytime during office hours to get your paper.

By Wednesday late afternoon/early evening, your grades will be updated in Desire to Learn.  Check your grades, and do let me know if anything looks amiss.

Thanks for all your hard work this semester!  Have a great break!

English 101: Reminders from Class on Monday, November 23

November 23, 2009 Mrs. Olson Leave a comment

Since we didn’t get to talking about the novel today, I gave you a short writing assignment.  You should write a short response (4-5 paragraphs) where you explain which character from “Turning the Tide” is the real monster.  You should use three specific examples from the novel to support your analysis.

Further, if you’re going to be gone on Wednesday, turn in the homework that’s due as well as the quiz (if you want an excused absence).

Don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.

Do social media sites have potential for the classroom?  Or would it be weird for your professors to see your Friday night escapades?

Here’s a nice read about Twitter in the classroom.

All Classes: Do Colleges Need to Supply You with a School Email Address?

November 11, 2009 Mrs. Olson Leave a comment

I’ve heard many a student complain about the high volume of online stuff associated with college: Desire 2 Learn, Web-Advisor, a email account to monitor, a crazy professor’s website, Turnitin.com, etc.

Click here to read about whether or not a school should supply you with an email address.
