All Students: Reminders for Class on Fri., Apr. 24 and Tues., Apr. 28
I know we’re covering a lot in class these last few days. Click “read the rest of the entry,” review the notes from last class, and be sure that you’re prepared.
All Students: For Class on Fri., Apr. 24 or Tues., Apr. 28:

1) Bring a Draft to Class.
Each class for the rest of the semester will be in a sort of writing workshop format. This means that you need to have a fresh draft of your project number 5 for each class. My goal here is to have you revise as you go; if you do that, then hopefully you’ll have a strong final draft ready to go by finals week.
2) Bring Highlighters and Scissors to Class.
We are going to do a revision activity that requires highlighters and scissors (M/W/F students – you don’t need scissors until Wednesday). Bring as many different colors to class as you can.
3) Finish Your Analysis of Example Essay #1 to Turn in For a Quiz Grade.
I’ll collect your analysis of the example essay about abortion. Feel free to write your responses on the copies you printed.
If you missed the questions during class, here they are:
- What kind of project is the essay? Does the student use the correct structure for the type of project?
- Does the student clearly connect his source information to his project? Does he use templates? Find one place where you think his usage is really good and really bad.
- Does the student address counterarguments? How does he work them into his project?
- Does the student consider his audience? How does he do this?
5) Finish Your Responses to Unit IV and your assessment of your progress in the course.
During this unit, I will ask you to write a little bit about how you might develop a project in future classes; in other words, I am going to ask you to define your personal writing process. My plan to is to have you use your notes that you have created about each unit to help you get started. So finish up your responses to Unit IV and your assessment of your progress in the course (these are your notes – I won’t see your responses here).
- Assessment of Unit IV:
- What was the most difficult part of developing and writing this project? Why?
- Did you try the different pre-writing and re-writing activities? Why or why not?
- Were any of those activities helpful?
- What are you goals for your writing as you finish this semester?
- Assessment of Progress in the Course:
- During each unit, I asked you to try specific pre-writing and re-writing tasks. Did you try these tasks? Why or why not?
- Of the different pre-writing tasks you tried, which ones seemed to be the most helpful? …Re-writing? Why?
- One of the points of this class was to help you develop your own writing process. What kind of writing process (pre-writing, writing, and re-writing) would you use for a project in another class? Why?
